Archaeology — Medieval; late 13th century
Bowl
Complete footed wooden bowl with a knot in the flange. There is an external burning on the base and internal knife-cuts. The wide rim might have helped to avoid spillage by the owner. A total of 18 wooden vessels were found in a pit on the site of St Mary Spital medieval hospital. They were probably used by patients - some bowls had personal marks underneath suggesting they were used by individual patients. One of several wooden bowls and dishes found on the site of the medieval hospital of St Mary Spital. Some are scratched with marks, possibly to show they belonged to particular patients.
