The Patten-Maker's Arms
Lawerence Gifford issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business near Strand Bridge, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 3022; Obv inscription: LAVRENCE.GIFFORD (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Patten-makers' arms (in field); Rev inscription: NEARE.STRAND.BRIGE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = L.E.G. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The arms of the Worshipful company of Pattenmakers are: Gules on a chevron argent between three pattens or, tied argent, the ties lines azure, two cutting knives conjoined sable; in the middle chief two knives in saltire (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by Heather Child...(London, 1960).
