The Salutation Tavern
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued for a business at the Salutation tavern, in the Strand, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2998; Obv inscription: AT.THE.SALVATION (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Two men saluting (in field); Rev inscription: TAVERNE.IN.THE.STRAND (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = L.E.P. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
The image of two men saluting is a representation of the Salutation of the Virgin, but over time was simplified to this image, though the name of the premises still indicates the original meaning. Burn, A Descriptive Catalogue of the London Traders, Tavern, and Coffee-house Tokens current in the Seventeenth Century, presented to the Corporation Library by Henry Benjamin Hanbury Beaufoy, 2nd ed. (London, 1855), no. 142. The Strand lies in the City of Westminster, having formerly been part of Westminster, Middlesex.
