Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 15th century
Needle case, needle holder
Needle case inscribed 'mater dei memento ...' (meaning 'Mother of God remember me') and '... iaspar melchior bal' (meaning 'Jaspar, Melchior, Balthazar', the traditional names of the Three Kings). The names of the Three Kings were often added to objects in the medieval period as they were thought to have the power to ward off evil, bring good luck, cure epilepsy and other ailments and also find lost property. There is an Agnus Dei (Lamb of God) on the base.
