The Indian and Arrow
Richard Richmond issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at Smithfield Bars without.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2895; Obv inscription: RICHARD.RICHMOND.AT.YE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = An Indian holding an arrow (in field); Rev inscription: WITHOVT.SMITHFEILD.BARRS (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENNY / 1667 (in four lines of Roman capitals, in field).
The issuer was 'Richard Richmond of St Sepulchre b. 1664, appr. Apothecary 1658' (see Percival Boyd, [Inhabitants of London]. Society of Genealogists, MS. 17776, as cited in, token number 7987 in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 59, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VII - City of London.Smithfield Bars formed the boundary between the outer edge of the City of London, in the ward of Farringdon Without, and Finsbury, Middlesex, now part of London Borough of Camden. The location of issue for this token would have been outside the City boundary, in Finsbury.
