The Three Sugar Loaves
Joseph Collins issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the sign of the Three Sugarloaves, in Smithfield Bars without.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2889; Obv inscription: IOSEPH.COLLINS.AT.THE.3 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Three sugar-loaves joined (in field); Rev inscription: WITHOVT.SMITHFEILD.BARS (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
Smithfield Bars formed the boundary between the outer edge of the City of London, in the ward of Farringdon Without, and Finsbury, Middlesex, now part of London Borough of Camden. The location of issue for this token would have been outside the City boundary, in Finsbury.
