The Tallow Chandler
Henry Jordan, a tallow chandler (candlemaker), issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business in Shoreditch, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2824; Obv inscription: HENRYE.IORDEN.TALLOW (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A man dipping candles (in field); Rev inscription: CHANDLER.IN.SHORDICH (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = H.A.I. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
Shoreditch, now Shoreditch High Street, lay in the parish of St Leonard Shoreditch, in Holborn, Middlesex; the area is now part of the London Borough of Hackney.
