St Mary Overy's Dock, Southwark, 1881
St Mary Overy's Dock, Southwark, 1881. This photograph was commissioned by the Society for Photographing Relics of Old London to form part of a permanent visual record of historic buildings threatened with alteration or possible demolition in the 1870s and 1880s. There had been a dock at this location for centuries and it was regarded by the Society as 'a quaint and interesting nook of Old London'. It still exists today and now contains a replica of Sir Francis Drake's ship, 'The Golden Hinde', in which he circumnavigated the world in 1577-1580.
