The Black Jack
Thomas Whittle issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business at the corner of Beech Lane, on Red Cross Street (area north of Fore Street). A black jack as seen on the token, is a tankard shaped leather jug.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2389; Obv inscription: RED.+. STREETE.1657 (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = THO / WHIT / TLE (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field); Rev inscription: CORNER.BEECH.LANE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A black jack (in field).
Red Cross Street, ran north off Fore Street towards the Barbican, in the ward of Cripplegate Without (now Cripplegate Ward), in the City of London.
