The Red Lion
Ralph Winckles issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the sign of the Red Lion, in Newton Street (now High Holborn), Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 2068; Obv inscription: RALPH.WINCKLES.AT.YE.RED (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A lion rampant 1669 (date on either side of sign, in field); Rev inscription: LYON.IN.NEWTON.STREET (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY / R.M.W. (in four lines of Roman capitals with triad of initials as bottom, in field).
Newton Street, now part of High Holborn, lies in the London Borough of Camden, having formerly been part of Holborn, Middlesex.
