Simon Marshal issued this trade token, worth a farthing at the Vine tavern, in Holborn, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1435; Obv inscription: SIMON.MARSHAL.VINE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A vine (in field); Rev inscription: TAVERNE.IN.HOLBORNE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = S.M.M. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field)
The issuer is Siman Marshal, apprenticed Vintner 1634, see C. Webb ‘London Livery Company Apprenticeship Registers’ (London, 1996-, xliii, 195, and 370. See also token numbers 7099a and 7099b in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 59, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VII - City of London. Holborn, was formerly part of Middlesex, and now lies within the London Borough of Camden.
