The Salutation Tavern
Daniel Grey issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the Salutation tavern, in Holborn, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1412; Obv inscription: DANIELL. GREY. SALLVTATION (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The angel Gabriel saluting the Virgin (in field); Rev inscription: TAVERNE. IN. HOLBORNE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
The issuer is Daniel Grey, apprenticed Vinter 1647, see C. Webb ‘London Livery Company Apprenticeship Registers’ (London, 1996-, xliii. 125, and 357). Holborn, was formerly part of Middlesex, and now lies within the London Borough of Camden.
