The Haberdashers' Arms
John French issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business at Holborn Bars, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1407; Obv inscription: IOHN.FRENCH.AT (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = The Haberdashers' arms (in field); Rev inscription: HOVLBORNE.BARS (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = I.F (in field, in Roman capitals).
The arms of the Worshipful company of Haberdashers are: Barry wavy of six argent and azure on a bend gules a lion passant guardant (J. Bromley, The Armorial Bearings of the Guilds of London: a record of the heraldry of the surviving companies with historical notes; with...[illustrations] by Heather Child...(London, 1960). Holborn Bars formed the entrance to the City of London from Middlesex, in the ward of Farringdon Without; the bars were removed in the 18th century, see Henry A.
