The Sun Tavern
This trade token, worth a half penny, was issued at the Sun tavern, at Holborn Bridge, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1388; Obv inscription: CLARVEATO.AT.THE.SVNN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A sun (in field); Rev inscription: TAVERN.AT.HOLBVRN.BRIDG (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENY / 1668 (in four lines of Roman capitals, in field).
The issuer is Fernelius Clarveate apprenticed Vinter 1662...; apprentices bound to Farnelius Clarveato, see C. Webb ‘London Livery Company Apprenticeship Registers’ (London, 1996--, xliii. 63, 346). Holborn Bridge lay 'at the east end of Holborn Hill and north end of Fleet Market over the Fleet, at its junction with the Holborn, when the streams flowed openly through the City' (see Henry A.
