The Ship
Jane Boardman issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for her busienss in near Staple Inn, in Holborn, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1371; Obv inscription: IANE.BOARDMAN.NEERE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Two ships at sea before a town (in field); Rev inscription: STAPLES.INN.IN.HOLBORN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HER / HALFE / PENNY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
Staple Inn lay on the south side of Holborn Bars, Middlesex, see Henry A. Harben, A dictionary of London (London, 1918). The area now lies in the London Borough of Camden.
