James Cole issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his premises in Gray's Inn Lane, Holborn, Middlesex. Cole was a piece broker, someone who bought scraps of cloth to sell on.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1244; Obv inscription: IAMES.COLE.IN.GRAISE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field); Rev inscription: INNE.LANE.PEICE.BROKER (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = I.K.C. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
