The Mermaid
Richard Sutton issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the Mermaid tavern, in Gray's Inn Gate, Holborn, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1238; Obv inscription: RICH. SVTTON. AT. YE. MARMADE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A mermaid (in field); Rev inscription: AT.GRASEIN.GATE.IN.HOLBVRN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
