The King's Head
George Yard issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the King's Head tavern, by Gray's Inn Gate, in Holborn, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1233; Obv inscription: GEORGE.YARD.IN.HOBORN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = King's bust crowned and T.C (initials in Roman capitals on either side of bust, in field); Rev inscription: BY.GRAYES.INN.GATE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENY (in three lines of Roman capitals, in field).
Gray's Inn Gate, lay to the south of Gray's Inn, in Holborn, Middlesex. The area of Gray's Inn, is now in the London Borough of Camden.
