The Dog and Bear
Robert Nicholls issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the Dog and Bear tavern, in Finsbury, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1041; Obv inscription: ROBERT. NICHOLLS. AT. YE. DOG (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A dog and bear dancing (in field); Rev inscription: AND.BEARE.IN.FINSBVRY (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALF / PENY / 1668 (in four lines of Roman capitals, in field).
The district of Finsbury lay in Middlesex, the area is now part of the London Borough of Islington.
