The Bell and Black Horse
John Harcourt issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business at the Bell and Black Horse tavern in Finsbury, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 1039; Obv inscription: IOHN. HARCOVRT. AT. YE. BEL. AND (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A horse and a bell (in field); Rev inscription: BLACK.HORSE.AT.FINSBVRY (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENNY / 1668 (in four lines of Roman capitals, in field).
See also token number 7916 in the Sylloge of Coins of the British Isles, 62, The Norweb Collection: Tokens of the British Isles 1575-1750, Part VIII - Middlesex and Uncertain Pieces. The Bell and Black Horse seems to have had new ownership by 1671, when a token was issued by another person. This token is in the museum collections, NN17302. The district of Finsbury lay in Middlesex, the area is now part of the London Borough of Islington.
