The Rose Tavern
This trade token, worth a farthing, was issued at the Rose tavern, in Convent Garden, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 740; Obv inscription: AT.THE.ROSE.TAVERN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A full-blown rose (in field); Rev inscription: IN.COVEN.GARDEN (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = W.M.L. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
'William Long appears in the rate-books, 1651 and 1657, among the assessed on the east side of Birdges Street; and in the burial register he is noticed as buried in hte churchyard, August 5, 1661', Boyne, 1889, p.575. Covent Garden lies in the London borough of Camden, and City of Westminster, having formerly been part of Middlesex.
