Our Lady of Amersfoort
Part of a pilgrim badge from the shrine of Our Lady of Amersfoort in the Netherlands. This is the top left-hand side of a circular, openwork badge which bears an inscription saying ‘AMERSFOERT’. The complete badge would have shown the scene of a woman with a bucket pulling a statue of the Virgin Mary and Child out of the city’s canal, inside a circular frame surmounted by three turrets.
The shrine of Our Lady of Amersfoort became a popular pilgrimage destination after a woman called Margriete Albert Gysendochter found a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary under the ice in Amersfoort canal in December 1444. The statue was placed in the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin in Amersfoort and in the year after at least 548 miracles were noted after pilgrims had prayed to the statue.
