The Nag's Head
Henry Daniel issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business, the Nag's Head tavern in Clerkenwell Green, Middlesex. The depiction of Daniel and the lion is a reference to the issuers name.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 660; Obv inscription: HENRY.DANIEL.AT.THE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = Daniel in the lion's den (in field); Rev inscription: ON.CLARKEN.WEL.GRENE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A horse's head (in field).
Clerkenwell Green was formerly part of Middlesex, and is now part of the London Borough of Islington.
