The Virgin Mary
Pilgrim badge of the Virgin Mary from an unknown shrine. This circular, thin, copper alloy badge is stamped with monogram of the name MARIA (the five letters have been interwoven into a single character). The monogram is crowned (a reference to Mary’s status as the Queen of Heaven) and is surrounded by a cabled border. The Virgin was thought of as a universal protector and badges depicting her figure, initials, symbols or monograms were popular protective charms.
