Our Lady of Walsingham
Part of a pilgrim badge from the shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham at Walsingham Priory. This is a figure of the Angel Gabriel, which would have formed part of a badge depicting the Annunciation (the moment when the Angel Gabriel announced to the Virgin Mary that she was to give birth to Christ). Gabriel is wearing a long, ankle-length robe which falls in narrow folds from his waist and is decorated with stripes and jewels. He wears a jewelled belt and has a line of buttons from the neck of his robe to his belt. His left hand is raised with his forefinger pointing towards Mary (who would have been standing on his right on a complete badge).
The shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham in Norfolk was a popular pilgrimage destination in the medieval period, especially after Henry III made a series of pilgrimages there in the 13th century.
