The Pageant Tavern
This trade token, worth a half penny, was issued at the Pageant tavern in Charing Cross, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 553; Obv inscription: THE / PAGEANT / TAVERNE / AT. CHARING / CROSS. I / W (in six lines of Roman capitals, in field); Rev inscription: A triumphal arch with three gates within a garland (in field).
The depiction on the token, used as the tavern sign is one of the triumphal arches erected in Fleet Street and the Strand, in April 1661, which were to be left standing for one year, see J. H. Burn, A Descriptive Catalogue of the London Traders, Tavern, and Coffee-house Tokens current in the Seventeenth Century, presented to the Corporation Library by Henry Benjamin Hanbury Beaufoy, 2nd ed. (London, 1855), no. 304. Charing Cross lies in the City of Westminster, having formerly been part of Westminster, Middlesex.
