The Lion and Ball
Thomas Tonge issued this trade token, worth a farthing, for his business at the Red Lion, Charing Cross, Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 552; Obv inscription: THOMAS.TONGE.AT.THE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A lion rampant holding a ball (in field); Rev inscription: NERE.CHERING.CROSSE (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = T.E.T. (triad of initials in Roman capitals, in field).
A notice in the London Gazette, No. 234, February 10-13, 1667, "These are to give notice, that the Post-house is removed from the Swan, near Charing-Cross, to the Red Lyon over against the meuse-gate", as cited in Boyne (1889), p. 558, may refer to this token and to token 96.66/303 in the museum collection.
