Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; mid-late 14th century
Monstrance from Walsingham
Pilgrim badge from the shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham at Walsingham Priory. This open work badge depicts the phial of the Virgin Mary’s Holy Milk, which was on display at the shrine. The phial shown in this badge is enclosed in a monstrance (a vessel used for displaying holy relics). A small rectangle of foil, which was possibly once burnished or painted white, is fixed behind the phial. On the stem of the monstrance is a scroll with the words ‘lac Marie’ (Mary’s milk).
The shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham in Norfolk was a popular pilgrimage destination in the medieval period, especially after Henry III made a series of pilgrimages there in the 13th century.
