Archaeology — Middle Saxon; late 8th - mid-9th century
Animal remains, animal bone, comb
Bone hair comb with a central connecting plate decorated with incised lattice panels. The connecting plate is riveted to the tooth plates (five iron rivets survive out of seven). Some of the teeth have worn down through use. This was among a number of large fine combs from the Royal Opera House site. Intended for personal use, these combs may also have had a symbolic function, and could have been marriage gifts.
