The Bacon Shop
Matthew Dune, a butcher, issued this trade token, worth a half penny, for his business, a bacon shop in Butcher Row ( area near The Strand), Middlesex.
Boyne & Williamson (1889) reference London number 452; Obv inscription: MATHEW. DVNE. AT. YE. BACON. SHOP (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = A side of bacon (in field); Rev inscrption: IN. BVTCHER. ROW. AT. TEMPLE. BAR (around field, in Roman capitals) Device = HIS / HALFE / PENNY / M.E.D. (in four lines of Roman capitals with triad of initials as bottom, in field).
There is another similar token in the museum collection, 96.66/252. Butcher Row was formerly part of Middlesex, and is now part of the City of Westminster.
