Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 15th century
Cross in quatrefoil; inscribed
Pilgrim badge from an unknown shrine. This thin, circular copper alloy badge is stamped with a design of a cross within a quatrefoil. There is a legend around the edge: ‘S.ENGRE.DREN’. Pilgrims who travelled to religious shrines frequently bought souvenirs of their pious journey such as ampullae (small bottles for holy water), badges and figurines. This type of thin copper alloy badge could be sewn onto a pilgrim’s clothes or into the pages of a prayer book.
