Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 14th-15th century
Crucifix fragment
Part of a pilgrim badge from an unknown shrine in the form of an altar at the base of a flowering crucifix. This fragment shows the altar and the base of the cross, which seems to be decorated with leaves and crockets so that the wood looks as though it is bursting into life. The altar is covered with a diamond pattern. Before the Reformation in the 16th century, every church had a large crucifix, known as a rood, on display. Some roods were associated with miracles and became the focus for pilgrimages.
