Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 14th-15th century
Badge, pilgrim badge
This fragment is part of the circular frame of a badge. Within the frame is a small figure in a long robe (head and upper body missing). The frame is decorated with cross-hatching. It is possible that this is a pilgrim souvenir, but if so, the shrine where it was made is currently unknown. Pilgrims who travelled to religious shrines frequently bought souvenirs of their pious journey such as ampullae (small bottles for holy water), badges and figurines.
