Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; mid 15th century
Richard Caister
Part of a pilgrim badge from the shrine of Richard Caister in Norwich. The badge depicts God’s head surrounded by rays of glory. Below the head is a band of clouds. The tail of a dove (representing the Holy Ghost) can be seen in the centre underneath the clouds. This is a fragment from the top of a badge commemorating Richard Caister, the vicar of St Stephen’s in Norwich from 1402-1420. He was a very devout and scholarly man, and after his death his tomb at St Stephen’s became the focus of pilgrimage.
