Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 14th-15th century
St Alban?
Fragment of a pilgrim badge possibly depicting the martyrdom of St Alban. Only part of the scene survives: the legs of a knight? with long pointed shoes. Part of the frame survives from the bottom right side and the base. The badge is very corroded so it is hard to see the detail and be certain about the identification but the scene does resemble that of 87.131/2, a confirmed St Alban badge.
If the identification is correct, the complete scene would show a knight on the right, having just cut off the head of St Alban. The saint would be sinking to his knees on the left side of the badge. Only the knight's legs and feet survive on this badge.
