Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 15th century
Unidentified saint
Pilgrim badge from an unknown shrine. This badge is made from a thin copper alloy sheet and is stamped with the figure of a crowned saint and the letters ‘AU’. It is unclear which saint is represented here. Pilgrims who travelled to religious shrines frequently bought souvenirs of their pious journey such as ampullae (small bottles for holy water), badges and figurines.
