Richard Caister
Pilgrim badge from the shrine of Richard Caister in Norwich. Richard Caister was the vicar of St Stephen’s in Norwich from 1402-1420. He was a very devout and scholarly man, and after his death his tomb at St Stephen’s became the focus of pilgrimage. This badge depicts Caister preaching from a pulpit. The badge is framed by a scroll with an inscription: ‘SOLI DEO HOO ET HONO ET GLORIA’. This is part of a phrase from St Paul’s First Epistle to Timothy (1:17) in the Bible meaning ‘the only God, be honour and glory’. At the top of the frame are two hands, which are the remains of the figure of God the Father with His palms open in judgement. To the left of Richard Caister’s head is the Holy Dove.
