St Peter and St Paul
Pilgrim badge from the shrines of St Peter and St Paul in Rome, Italy. This rectangular badge would have had stitching loops in the corners but they have broken off. The figure of St Peter is on the right and is holding the keys to heaven over his left shoulder. He also holds a long cross in his right hand, which refers to his death by crucifixion. St Paul is on the left holding his sword, a reference to his martyrdom by beheading. Around the edge is an inscription: ‘+SIGNA APOSTOLORUM PETRI ET PAVLI’ (meaning, ‘Sign of the Apostles Peter and Paul’). Rome was one of the most important pilgrimage centres in Christendom. It took about 49 days to travel there from England.
