Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 15th century
Badge, devotional badge
Devotional badge of St Catherine in the shape of a spiked wheel. St Catherine was a very popular saint but it is unlikely that this badge is a pilgrim souvenir from a particular shrine. It is probably a badge worn by someone who was especially devoted to the saint. The main shrine of St Catherine was her sanctuary on Mount Sinai in Egypt, which would have been too remote for most medieval Londoners.
Saint Catherine was said to have lived in the 4th century and was condemned to death on a wheel by the Roman emperor Maxentius for refusing to give up her Christian beliefs. The wheel miraculously broke after Catherine prayed to God and so Maxentius beheaded her.
