Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; late 15th century
King Henry of Windsor; Henry VI
This pewter pilgrim badge depicts Henry VI, the last monarch of the Lancastrian dynasty, who was put to death by King Edward IV in the Tower of London in 1471. He had a reputation for piety, and soon Londoners were visiting his tomb in St George's chapel, Windsor, where miraculous cures were reported. This badge would have been bought by a pilgrim as a souvenir of their visit to the shrine. Henry is shown in robes of state holding an orb in his right hand and a sceptre (originally combining a fleur-de-lis and cross) in his left. A heraldic antelope with forked tail and serrated horns (the king's personal badge) lies at his feet.
