Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 14th-15th century
St Bridget?
Part of a pilgrim badge, possibly from the shrine of St Bridget in Vadstena, Sweden. St Bridget (known as St Birgitta in Sweden) was famous for having visions of Christ’s Passion and of the future. She spent much of her later life on pilgrimages. This badge depicts a standing figure in a long robe and a cloak, writing at a desk. St Bridget is usually shown at a writing desk. There was a shrine to St Bridget at Syon Abbey in Isleworth in west London but the design of this badge resembles the Swedish badges more closely. The frame of the badge and the saint’s head are missing on this example, which makes identification more difficult.
