Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; 15th century
Badge, devotional badge
Part of a devotional badge relating to Jesus Christ in the form of a chalice containing seven sacramental hosts (circular wafers taken during Holy Communion). Each host is marked with a cross. The stem and foot of the chalice are missing. The seven hosts may represent the Seven Sacraments (baptism, confirmation, matrimony, mass, penance, ordination and extreme unction). By placing them inside the chalice the badge may be implying that all the sacraments derived their virtue from Christ’s sacrifice. This may not be a pilgrim souvenir from a particular shrine but could have been worn as an aid to devotion.
