Saxon & Medieval — Late Medieval; late 14th century-early 15th century
K
This pewter badge or brooch is in the form of a letter 'K' and is decorated with four fleurs-de-lis. It was probably a love-token, designed to imitate the jewelled letter brooches that wealthy people gave as love-tokens in the 14th and 15th centuries. A large number of these pewter letter brooches have been found in London. This suggests that less affluent customers could choose from a range of ready-made letter brooches. Buyers probably chose either the initial of their own name or that of their lover.
