Archaeology — Late Medieval; late 14th century
Purse
This woven silk purse from Italy would have been expensive to buy. Wealthy Londoners obtained luxury silks from Italy for furnishings, clothing and accessories, and like other costly goods, the fabrics were handed down from one generation to another. In 1305 Edith le Paumier, a London brewer, bequeathed a mattress cover of silk with a central panel of 'cloth of Venice' to her niece. The pattern woven into this purse is called 'lampas' and has its origins in the Middle or Near East.
