Decorative arts — 1758-1765
Figure
A number of models of Black people made by Bow Pottery were referred to as 'slaves' in the company's order books. Many were copies of figures crafted by the German porcelain manufacturers Meissen. This Black man is dressed in a turban, as were many of the Black servants employed by wealthy 18th century Londoners. Requiring servants to dress in Oriental clothing emphasised their exotic origins, and the differences between them and their employers.
