This skin-covered model boat is based on seagoing Irish curachs of the type used during the Iron Age. These boats were made of animal skins stretched over a wooden framework. After Britain was separated from the Continent by rising sea levels, settlement was made by boats such as this. The Irish Saint Brendan, nicknamed 'The Navigator', is supposed to have travelled to Britain during the 6th century in a boat like this one.
