Port & River — 1910-1950
Hook, dockers drum hook
This sort of dockers' hook was known as a can hook or metal-drum hook. It was used by dockers in Londons' docks to handle drums, metal casks or cans. The 'hook' was replaced by a small plate which hooked under the rim around the end of the container, thus making it easier to grip.
