Animal remains, mammoth tusk
An almost complete tusk of a woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius), probably young at death. From the Middle Pleistocene deposits at Uphall Pit, Ilford, dated 200,000 - 170,000 BCE.
Large numbers of bones from mammoths and other herbivores such as bison have been recovered from Uphall Brick Pit, Ilford. The examples displayed here were discovered in a layer rich in animal remains. It is thought these animals were all drowned by a suddent catastrophic flood in the Thames Valley around 200,000 years ago.
