Mortarium
Mortarium with a maker's stamp near spout and hole in base. Stamp: SOLLVS F, short for 'Sollus fecit' in Latin (meaning 'Sollus made me'). The mortarium is made from Verulamium Region White ware. Mortaria were used to grind and mix ingredients in the kitchen. They were often used so much that their owners wore holes in the bottom.
