Roman — Roman; mid 2nd century
Dish
This shiny, bright orange, samian ware dish, was made in France in the mid 2nd CE and imported to Britain. Although it has no decoration, the skilled potter who made it stamped it with their mark 'CETVS FE' - this translates from Latin to mean 'Cetus made this'. Samian ware was popular in Roman London, reflecting the busy, cosmopolitian nature of this trading settlement - archaeologists have found this type of pottery in shops, homes, and warehouses by the river. This dish was found in the city, it had been put in a pit sealed with clay, suggesting that it had been deliberately placed there as part of a ritual.
